Antique and historically rare in this production interesting tobacco pipe made of massa / pressed meerschaum. This mass consisted of ground meerschaum waste, which could be cast in various shapes with a binding agent. Most of these finished cast pipe heads were decorated with almost crude carvings and fictitious dates such as 1785 to make the pipes appear older than they actually were. This one was left smooth and the pipe head was elaborately colored or calcined. It was also fitted with an elaborate combined brass / silver fitting. Germany between 1840-60. Very good and well-maintained original condition. Deko not for sale!
